This is a story I’ve recently been sharing with our producer team. If you’re serious about selling beats online you need to read this. I’m going to be spilling out some highly valuable gems in this one. It can help you avoid some major mistakes and save you money and time towards your beat selling business.
So, let’s dive in.
For the past 6 or so years I’ve been heavily studying the music production scene. More specifically the ‘selling beats online’ scene. Along my journey I’ve came across a close friend. At the time of meeting him back in 2012 I noticed the beginning of the selling beats online era. During this time he was selling his beats off of Soundclick. He did no advertising, no marketing. He just uploaded beats and he was raking in on average $10,000k per month. Some months he’d make $8k other months he’d make $15k. It all depended on how many beats he released and how unique the beats were.
It was insane to hear at the time.
You mean to tell me all you had to do was upload your beats to Soundclick and you could make a killing? Well, yes. This is because at the time there was very low competition. There was only a handful of online producers. This was a new market being formed right in front of our eyes. So if you were bringing professional beats to the table at the time you were most likely making more than a living online.
As time went on more and more producers started catching on.
More producers joined the site. In order for him to keep those $10k per month numbers he needed to start advertising. This was fairly simple. Soundclick made it very easy to advertise on there site. It required no marketing knowledge. All you had to do was invest some money.
Over time things continued to change. The market grew larger. New companies like Beatstars was introduced. Type beats on youtube was introduced. And a whole new generation of online producers formed.
The year is now 2019 and he’s barley bringing in $1k per month. So how did this happen?
Lesson 1: It’s no longer enough for you to just be a music producer in order to successfully sell beats online.
When 2019 hit my friend was completely unaware of the changes in the industry. He saw new younger producers making more money than him online. He began to think his beats were no longer up to par.
Well, I wouldn’t say it’s the beats. The fact is the Soundclick age of selling beats online was a golden age. I don’t mean there was more money involved because that isn’t true. The market has actually grown extremely. There are so many more artists buying beats online.
What I mean is it was so simple to make money online by selling beats. You needed no business knowledge at all. But now you do.
Learn How To Run A Business
If you want to run a successful online business of selling beats you first need to know how to run a business. The market has grown so much that in order for you to make a living you need to learn business. You need a business plan, a marketing plan, a customer service plan, and advertising plan etc. This is where he failed.
He had hundreds of previous customers yet he never set up an email list for them. There are plenty of ways to market online yet he never learned how to do one of them. He never built a brand.
If you’re going to sell beats online you need to have a plan! Spend an equal amount of time (if not more) on learning how to plan your online beat selling business. You can have the greatest beats in the world but if you don’t market them no one will know they exist. Or you can have the worst beats in the world and if you market them you’ll eventually grow a fan base.
Lesson 2: Never get comfortable. Learn to adapt.
The second biggest mistake my friend made was he got way to comfortable. He thought just because he was making $10k per month at the time it would magically last a lifetime. In some way this is true. You can make that income last a lifetime if you learn to adapt. Adaptation is something he never learned.
What we must realize is the music industry as a whole never stays the same for a long period of time. Things are always changing and shifting. Especially with the rise of new technology. So you must learn to adapt. When something big changes you need to revisit your business plan and adjust it to make sure you stay ahead. If you fail to do this your 15 minutes of fame will soon fade away and you’ll be back to square one.
I hope this article brings some value and awareness to your beat selling efforts. Please realize that the money is there. Many producers are making high six figures off selling beats online. The possibility is endless. As I close out this article I’ll leave you with one last piece of advice.
Study those who are winning now so you can win later.
This means you should spend some time watching producers who are successful at selling beats online now. Study what they’re doing. Whats working for them? What mistakes have they made? This can be your best teacher and it’s completely free. Pay attention to the game.
